Acupuncture Volunteer in Nepal

Updated: Aug 14

I had the privilege of volunteering as an acupuncturist at a small clinic in the rural village of Bajrabarahi, Nepal, through the non-profit organization Acupuncture Relief Project.

Bajrabarahi is located south of Kathmandu, a few hours' bus ride on the bumpy roads out of the city center.

The temples in the area are renowned for their mysteries and sacred spirit, attracting both worshippers and visitors.

During my time at the clinic, I worked six days a week, serving around 20 patients a day. Most patients live in harsh conditions without clean water and adequate electricity. Many have never seen a Western doctor or received proper medical care and medication. With farming and manual labor being many people's livelihoods, patients came to the clinic with serious conditions such as extremely high blood pressure, tuberculosis, cancer, and extremely swollen joints. While we faced physical and health challenges, we also encountered happiness, spirituality, generosity, and kindness throughout the process. This taught me many profound lessons on community and resilience.

Compassion is a critical element in my acupuncture practice, and I believe it is at the root of true healing. During my time in Nepal, I met amazing clinic staff filled with compassion and unconditional love. I am extremely grateful to have been part of this volunteer team and to work with incredible people in helping underprivileged patients. This experience has allowed me to become a more compassionate healing practitioner and explore a higher purpose in life.

Acupuncture Relief Project is always accepting generous donations, which go directly toward food, housing, clean water, and medical supplies at the clinic to help patients in Nepal.
