What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture session

Acupuncture is a comprehensive and multifaceted medicine with a clinical history stretching back thousands of years. We delicately insert disposable, hair-thin, sterilized prepackaged needles on specific body points that mainly run along 12 major meridians, just beneath the surface of the skin.

Acupuncture philosophy is based on the flow of “Qi”, which is a vital life force energy moving throughout your body. When Qi flow stagnates and becomes imbalanced, it manifests as pain and disease.

Acupuncture restores the flow of Qi and blood and stimulates the body’s self-regulating mechanism.

In Western medical theory, acupuncture improves the nerve signal to your brain and activates the release of natural biomolecules which act as natural painkillers to ease your pain. It also works by stimulating the nervous system by activating nociceptor sensory nerves and proprioceptor fibers that travel from the skin to the spine and brain. Acupuncture helps to address pain and symptoms, speeding up recovery.

It is also a great form of preventative care because it promotes deep relaxation and maintains body’s natural balance.

Conditions We Treat

F A Q
Frequently Asked Questions

I am afraid of needles. Is acupuncture painful? Is it safe?

The needles we use are different from hypodermic needles that used to give injections.  We use delicate, hair-thin needles that, for most people, barely feel it anything when they are inserted. You may feel slight pinch, heaviness, spreading, tingling sensation, which are associated with the positive therapeutic effects.

We also modify the needles for your optimal comfort.  In general, acupuncture sensations are deeply satisfying and make you feel relaxed both mentally and physically.

Upon agreement, we can provide trigger point treatments, which involve subtle needle manipulation that may have more intense sensation. Needles are prepackaged, FDA approved, and disposable so that they are completely safe.
